Introducing... Growing Wings

Long time no speak. After the 'Good Food' project was released I decided to take a step back and watch the word disperse. I want to thank everyone that contributed to the effort - from laying a verse on the mixtape itself, to posting on blogs after its release. A special shout out to (2)DopeBoyz for hosting the tape, it wouldn't have been heard by half as many people had it not been for Shake.

Now things must move forward, the feedback has driven me onto new things. I am the executive producer for Wing Span's latest EP called 'Growing Wings' [the artwork above is not the EP's final artwork - It was just me messing around]. I will be producing a large amount of the tracks on the EP, with help from Woody(sProduce). Shake has given... the nod (...my bad) to the project and has agreed to host it in collaboration with illRoots.

Wing Span recorded a promotional track this week, to get into the mindset for the EP. Check it out: HERE.

Finally, the day arrives. Frank Ramz has released the highly anticipated 'Make The Road By Walking' mixtape. I'm not going to act as if I JUST tore open the plastic wrap and started listening to this... I heard it when it was finished (about a month ago) and ever since then I have played songs from it everyday.

The idea of taking an entire album of experimental instrumentals and formulating an entirely new album on top of that is mind-boggling to me. When I listen to the songs I often wonder how Ramz actually did it... I don't want to know, I want it to add to the allure of the project's totality.

To me, this mixtape is an underground classic. I would hate to be the person that sees this and doesn't download it.

Concept: There is a part in every man's heart that is taken up by a love for something; whether it be love, money, women, a woman, music, travelling, etc. When things obstruct your love for it - you want it even more. I want the song to capture that feeling without explicitly saying what it is - which is the first verse. Second verse: The vocals say "Want to go back with you" - this verse is directed towards going back to that emotion. Written yesterday:

I think that there are two kinds of people - those that love to be sober and those that don't. I say this as I am 40,000 feet / 12,192 meters in the air. The dude next to me and I have gone through 3 bottles of red wine (unlimited and free). (He passed out onto his girlfriend half way through the flight (he couldn't handle his drink). I stayed up and listened to the drafts of Good Food, drank some more and wrote about deprivation, decline and degradation in the UK.)

Back to the point: There are two types of people - those who thrive in absolute sobriety and those who believe they thrive when they aren't sober. Shit, I love being impaired...

...Especially when I make music. I don't believe that you can make the most technically precise sounds / music when you are fucked up, but you have no reserve (you lose your inhibitions). You try things that you wouldn't otherwise. (I planned to get drunk on the plane and make some crazy beats... But my battery died within 20 minutes. So I just sat back, plugged the iPod in, and zoned out.)

Anyway, I am 1 hour and 32 minutes from Philadelphia, traveling at 524 miles per hour. I want to go to Philadelphia and move at 524 miles per hour. I want Good Food and the pursuing projects to be the best of 2009's underground. I want them to be easy-listening but hard-hitting. I want them to loosen your tension but tighten your mind. (I had an artificial confidence boost.)

So I decided, the album will have NO fillers. If you don't come hard enough, you will not be on the mixtape. Good Food may end up being 5 songs long and if you don't give your best, don't bother. I am willing to sacrifice the best of the beats in order to showcase the best quality collaborations.

Take that how you will, but this album is not just for me, it is for those who I have given an opportunity to. If you don't put your heart and soul into the music you make, then you will be dragging the other people in the project down. That, simply, isn't fair.

Anyway. Outdrunk the fuck out of someone two times the size of me and I still want more. (*presses the "call assistant" button*).

Trivia:

Jet the Hawk (ジェット・ザ・ホーク) is the 14-year-old hawk leader of the Babylon Rogues, and is often nicknamed the "Legendary Wind Master" due to his mastery of Extreme Gear.

At the doors of the Babylonian Fortress, Jet, Wave, and Storm awaken and are confronted by the Babylon Guardian, a large purple genie, and only succeed in defeating it with the help of Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy. They discover the fabled Babylonian Treasure to be the ancient Extreme Gear Magic Carpet.
Jet and Sonic finally decide to be more friendly to each other. Jet concedes to the fact that Sonic is faster than him. However, this doesn't make him want to beat Sonic any less than in the beginning.

In Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity Jet wishes upon a shooting star the power to beat Sonic, then when the shooting star crashes it causes an avalanche, making a newly found artifact activate, revealing to Jet the powers of Gravity Control. Proclaiming himself the fastest thing in the universe, Jet sets off to find the rest of the Ark's of the Cosmos, and prove to Sonic the Hedgehog once and for all he is the best.

Jet and Sonic meet up again at MeteoTech and Jet immediately jumps at the chance to prove once and for all to Sonic that he is the fastest in the universe. Later at the end of the game Jet and Sonic have a race to prove who gets the title of fastest and all of the Ark of the Cosmos. Jet and Sonic tie and Sonic gives his Ark of the Cosmos to him. Tails figures out that the Arks use Black Holes to use Gravity Control and if all of them are close enough to Babylon Garden the the entire world be sucked up by the massive Black Hole it would make.

One of Eggman's robots flies into the room and steals the Arks from Wave and flies them to Babylon Garden. Babylon Garden reverts back into it's usual form as a space ship and a black hole appears at it's center and begins sucking in the world. Jet, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Wave and Storm fly to the Garden and defeat the Core: ABIS program. The last cutscene from the game is Sonic, Tails, Knuckles driving through a city and Jet flying up beside them and challenging Sonic to another race.

Few people notice that Jet has the opposite color scheme to Sonic. Sonic is blue with green eyes, but Jet is green with blue eyes (Scourge the Hedgehog has the exact same color scheme).

Jet's original name was intended to be "Wind".

A Jungle On Wrist...

I was watching some guy on Youtube last night and he has a bunch of vlogs giving his opinion on Hip Hop. However, after viewing his videos for about 5 minutes, it was pretty clear that he started it to hate on Weezy and, thus, promote himself.

It got me to thinking about what is wrong with classic Hip Hop critics and what is wrong with the Hip Hop 2.0 followers... Lil' Wayne gives me the best example of what I am trying to say.

A few of the "real" Hip Hop fans favorites are as follows: Biggie, Pac, Jay-Z, Big L, Big Pun, Nas, Rakim, LL, KRS-ONE, Eminem, etc. (Those were put down for argument's sake...)

So they are at the top of their class in terms of: where they were born (NY, Cali, etc), their ability (lyrics, flow, delivery, etc), their longevity, etc. E.g. "Biggie is the King of New York and always will be, his albums / music will never die and his flow was the best ever."

Now. Where in that list are the Southern rappers? There are none that should be on that list, I hear you say? Ok...

Lil' Wayne is the best in the South, in my opinion. He has the lyrical ability to out-smart most of the new, young rappers coming from the South. His flow is original and dynamic and he can rap over almost everything. He moves with the times and always manages to end up on top. He has artistic integrity, even though it doesn't show on some of his more graphic and swagtastic records. I think his imagery is the best so far this century. He has been around for AGES and is still selling millions of records.

So with all of his corny records aside, I think he has / will reach the title of being one of the greatest in my opinion. Maybe even if it is just due to default - he should be there.

I believe the problem lies with the fact that the Hip Hop 2.0 followers have negated Wayne's ability in the eyes and ears of the underground / "real" Hip Hop scene by constantly supporting the weaker, yet more commercially-viable side of his repertoire. But considering that: He is the President of a huge Hip Hop record label, Cash Money - just like Puffy at Bad Boy. Puffy made those commercially-viable records that everyone bumped in the club / behind closed doors and people didn't respect him as an artist but, instead, a businessman. Whereas, Biggie was the figurehead for real Hip Hop in Bad Boy. Well... Wayne is both Biggie and Puffy in this scenario. He has to run a successful company, make millions of dollars for it to keep afloat and maintain its reputation, which he does. So we can call him a great businessman. But he also has the artistic ability, within him, to compete with the likes of LL Cool J, Eminem, Jay-Z (...record sales, etc...) To me, this makes him incredibly astute and talented. For that, I put him in my list.

Sorry about that... I wrote that kind of fast and angrily and I don't quite know how it came across. I was just getting annoyed by the constant comparisons of people to Lil Wayne, in terms of how good someone is, but the same person will turn around and say Lil' Wayne has no skill. He obviously does. And TONNES of it. So start accepting that he isn't like Soulja Boy et al. and start appreciating.

Update from the musical side of things: Max Schaefer performed a first draft of "Peaceful War" (see the beat in the imeem player in the sidebar). It was written and flowed very well and I am pretty excited about the track.

Is that even Hip Hop I am making anymore? I think I managed to reach one of my aims when I first created this blog. I saw that someone wrote "I just went back through all of my old updates and it's funny to see where I was back then" on their Twitter. So I decided to re-read my first blog post. I said that I didn't want to make beats, that I did not have the impetus. I think I proved myself wrong - I've made at least a beat a day, if not more, everyday since.

I also think that I have finally managed to transcend "Hip Hop of our generation and breaks into something unique and uncontaminated by comparisons". Which is a really cool Christmas present to myself, one that I will keep for life too. I guess my skewed genre affiliation has come in handy here. I am not trying to say this is my best beat, probably not by a long way, but it serves as a landmark for my evolving production style.

I guess I zoned out again. I keep listening to the drums and I'm out.

I really don't know what it is that is helping me to make at least one beat per day. I think it is the vision that this mixtape could be REALLY good.
